Intense Pulsed Light - Skin Rejuvenation
Description

Sun accelerates the aging process in skin. Some of the signs of premature skin aging are the appearance of pigmented lesions, vascular disorders such as telangiectasia and diffuse redness, and fine lines and wrinkles and a thinning of the dermis layer of the skin along with pooere texture and tone.

Intense pulsed light offers non-ablative rejuvenation, as opposed to the ablative effects of skin resurfacing with a CO2 or erbium laser. With ablation, layers of skin are removed from the epidermis, which leads to significant "down time" as the skin needs to heal.

Non-ablative rejuvenation with intense pulsed light produces a dermal healing response without injury to the epidermis. This causes stimulation of fibroblasts which encourages the formation of collagen which in turn will improve the remodeling of lines and wrinkles as well as plumping up the skin giving a better skin tone and texture.

Rejuvenation is really a combination of treating pigmentation and mild vascular conditions. Besides evening out skin colour you will notice an improvement in the skin’s tone and texture and there may even be some shrinkage of pore size and fine lines.

If you have a treatment for pigmentation or for diffuse redness, you will be very aware of this general improvement in the quality of your skin. Some people, however, have this treatment purely for these rejuvenative effects, when they don’t actually have any other pigmentary or vascular problems. It is good as a lead up to a major event like getting married, mother of the bride or other events where you wish to look your best.

With this treatment, gel is applied to the skin and the applicator is pulsed across the whole face, [or chest or hands], barely touching the skin. You will be aware of a mild sting [thought to be similar to rubber band flicking on the skin]. The skin will be soothed after treatment with a suitable after-care product.

There may be some redness appearing, particularly if there were a few visible blood vessels in the area, and there could be a little crusting or “dirty” look appear if there is any pigmentation present. Sometimes there may be a little swelling which usually goes in a few hours, but in some cases could be present for a few days.

I usually suggest a course of 3 to 6 treatments about 4 weeks apart. The remodeling of collagen is a relatively slow process, so full effect is not likely to be seen until about 3 months after final visit, although most people are aware of changes a few weeks after the start of treatment. A good skin care regime will obviously enhance the effects you are wishing to achieve, so talk with your Fleming therapist about this.

Collagen needs vitamin A and C for the fibroblasts to produce it, so using skin care high in these vitamins makes a lot of sense.  We stock Environ for this reason as it is based on increasingly higher levels of Vitamin A as you go through their program.  We suggest you use Environ skin care and incorporate it into your skin rejuvenation program.
